On behalf of the Rigoulene team and family, I would like to introduce you to the Rigoulene internships’ adventure, and the world of Limoges’ Porcelain Painting. The project was born when, after ten years spent in the United States, I came back in to France and more particularly to the Limousin region, in Limoges, where I was born and brought up. Limoges is famous worldwide for it’s porcelain. It is near Limoges that, during the 18th Century, kaolin was found: Following the discovery of kaolin, the region enjoyed a golden age. Our family was an active participant in the expansion of the porcelain industry over the following two centuries. Each generation, up to and including ours, has shared in this great adventure! Today through our internships, our ambition is to share with others the art of painting on porcelain, together with the history of Limoges porcelain.

The only town of any size in the Limousin region is the city of Limoges; with about , inhabitants, and an urban area of almost , inhabitants, greater Limoges provides about half of all the jobs in the region – which gives a good idea of how depopulated the rest of the region is. Until the turn of the millennium, the Limousin, part of the ” empty France ” area, was a region that had been losing population for a century or so; that decline has now been halted, thanks largely to an influx of people from outside the region, in from Britain and Holland, seeking a quiet location in which to settle.

Once a Roman city, Limoges, lying on the river Vienne and on a main route between Paris and Toulouse, has always been a major centre, in this relatively sparsely populated region. In the Middle Ages, it was renowned as a centre of arts and culture. In the nineteenth century, it became famed throughout Europe, and beyond, for its porcelaine; indeed the city became rich with its porcelaine industry, and much of the city centre dates from this period.

Limoges has a large historic quarter, with narrow streets and many fine half-timbered houses. Brive is also the most important centre in southern Limousin on account of its position as a communications hub, being the point where the east west route between Lyon and Bordeaux A 89 motorway crosses the north-south route between Paris and Toulouse A20 motorway.

The town rises up the steep sides of the narrow river valley. Apart from the Limoges area, which has half of the region’s population, Limousin is virtually synonymous with rurality. Limousin is among the least densely populated areas of France. In the south west, the region borders the Dordogne; the river Dordogne itself cuts through the south west of the region, after several kilometres where it, in its steep wooded valley, it forms the border with the neighbouring region of Auvergne.

Forming the north-western edge of the Massif Central, Limousin is a region that is relatively well watered, particularly in the east.

Timeline of Limoges Ancient and medieval history[ edit ] Scarce remains of pre-urban settlements have been found in the area of Limoges. The foundation was part of the reorganization of the province by the emperor Augustus , hence the new name. According to tradition, a temple consecrated to Venus , Diana , Minerva and Jupiter was located near the modern cathedral.

The city was on the typical Roman square plan, with two main streets crossing in the centre. It had a Senate and a currency of its own, a sign of its importance in the imperial age. Later, like many towns and cities in Gaul, it was renamed after the tribe here the Lemovices whose chief town it was; “Lemovices” subsequently evolved into “Limoges”, and “Lemovicinus” for the area around changed into ” Limousin “.

Limoges was evangelized by Saint Martial , who came to the city around with two companions, Alpinianus and Austriclinienus. However, in the late 3rd century it was increasingly abandoned, due to unsafe conditions created by the invasions of various Germanic tribes. Starting from the construction of the Abbey of St. Martial 9th century , another settlement grew around the tomb of the saint, while a third area, next to the residence of the viscount the future Castle of Saint Martial , seems to have been populated from the 10th century.

China Aster The history of Limoges china begins in the late s when kaolin was found in the soil near the city of Limoges in the region of France known as Limousin. The discovery of the kaolin meant that French manufacturers could produce the fine white porcelain similar to the fine porcelain of China. The first pieces of Limoges dinnerware were made in the Serves porcelain factory and were marked with royal crests.

Limoges, in the Middle Ages, comprised two towns: one called the “City”, the other the “Chateau” or “Castle”. The government of the “Castle” belonged at first to the Abbots of St. Martial who claimed to have received it from Louis the Pious.

Prehistoric Provence[ edit ] The entrance to the Cosquer Cave , decorated with paintings of auks, bison, seals and outlines of hands dating to 27, to 19, BC, is located 37 meters under the surface of the Calanque de Morgiou near Cassis. A bronze-age dolmen to BC near Draguignan The coast of Provence has some of the earliest known sites of human habitation in Europe. Primitive stone tools dated to 1 to 1. At the beginning of the Paleolithic period, the sea level in western Provence was meters higher than it is today.

By the end of the Paleolithic, it had dropped to metres lower than today’s sea level. The cave dwellings of the early inhabitants of Provence were regularly inundated by the rising sea or left far from the sea and swept away by erosion. In , a diver named Henri Cosquer discovered the mouth of a submarine cave 37 metres below the surface of the Calanque de Morgiou near Marseille.

The entrance led to a cave above sea level. Inside, the walls of the Cosquer Cave are decorated with drawings of bison, seals, auks, horses and outlines of human hands, dating to between 27, and 19, BC. The disappearance of the forests and the deer and other easily hunted game meant that the inhabitants of Provence had to survive on rabbits, snails and wild sheep. Since they were settled in one place they were able to develop new industries.

Inspired by the imported pottery from the eastern Mediterranean, in about BC they created the first pottery to be made in France. They were farmers and warriors, and gradually displaced the earlier pastoral people from their lands.
